AARP’s BACK TO WORK 50+ Program

From the AARP Site:

50+ jobseekers need help gaining skills, finding jobs and building financial security. One promising approach is to encourage existing community intermediaries — like community colleges and workforce investment boards — to put new emphasis on helping 50+ workers find new and better jobs. The AARP Foundation’s BACK TO WORK 50+ program is supporting over 20 sites across the country as they build programs and services targeting 50+ workers. BACK TO WORK 50+ connects 50+ workers with information, training, support, work experience, and employer access they need to get back into the workforce and sustain their income through employment. Early results suggest that this approach may bear fruit, as thousands of 50+ job seekers have called the AARP Foundation’s national toll-free hotline just in 2014.

Ageism in America

“…it must be noted that the status of older persons and our attitudes toward them are not only rooted in historic and economic circumstances. They also derive from deeply held human concerns and fears about the vulnerability inherent in the later years of life. Such feelings can translate into contempt and neglect.”

National Guild for Community Arts Education Benchmarking Data Report 2019

The latest edition of the National Guild’s Benchmarking Data Report is now available! This report contains a wealth of data—on staff and faculty compensation, instructional fees, income and expense ratios, and more—that can inform your planning and budgeting and help funders and policy makers better understand the needs and impact of our field. The data, gathered from 179 Guild member organizations, is presented in easy to read charts and tables.

For the first time, the report also includes sections on racial equity, creative aging, and analysis of salary information by organization type, type of community served, and organizational budget size.

Data was collected in 2019 before the pandemic and this summer’s uprising and call to reckoning about structural racism and anti-Black violence. This means that the data provides a valuable snapshot of where the community arts education field was just before these transformational events.

The 2019 Benchmarking Data Report is available to all Guild members that participated in the survey, free of charge. For access, contact programs@nationalguild.org.

The report is also available for purchase. Guild members receive a discounted rate (Guild membership is currently “pay what you can”).

School of Drag Attracts Intergenerational Performers

School of Drag, a Creative Aging program collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson, AZ (MOCA) and Fluxx Productions, is a 10-week workshop series that invites 55+ LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual, non-binary, pansexual, etc.) community members to explore art, narrative and performance which culminates into a showcase featuring performers of all ages and local professional drag performers. School of Drag creator, Dante Celeiro, leads this Creative Aging workshop series with Eli Burke, teaching artist and Education Director at MOCA.

Innovative “School of Drag” Event Mixes Generations and Gender Performance

In May 2019, gender performers of all ages wowed local audiences at the culminating event for “School of Drag,” an innovative arts workshop series held at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Tucson, AZ. This free intergenerational program, promoted to LGBTQIA+ members of the Tucson community ages 13-17 and 55+, was led by teaching artists Eli Burke, Education Director at MOCA and Dante Celeiro, founder of Fluxx Productions and creator of School of Drag. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants explored the history and social construction of gender through performance; developed their own drag character; invented a name; and designed and created their own costumes.
