description
The Elders Company of the Royal Exchange Theatre (Manchester, UK), started in 2014 to engage “people aged 60+ who want to feel connected to new people and ideas, be creative and challenge the stereotypes of ageing.”
Each year 20 people are recruited to the company. They take part in a year-long training program to develop performance skills, learn more about theater, and work with the theater’s Young Company. The Elders Company members assist in the creation of three special projects during the year. In 2019, they created, “A Funny Thing Happened in Isolation,” a documentary that followed a local theater group as they tackled lockdown. Members have been enthusiastic about their participation, especially the chance to learn and grow creatively.
